What to Know for this Winter Heating Season

The energy needed to keep your space comfortable during chilly Maine winters means higher overall energy use.

Additionally, supply costs, or the cost of the natural gas that is delivered to you, have risen, in large part because of colder-than-usual winter conditions.

Learn more about the cost of natural gas portion of your bill (also referred to as the “Energy Charge” or IPO) on our Commodity Pricing Page.

Low-income assistance Effective January 1, 2026: Residential customers may be eligible to receive a 30% discount on their delivery and gas supply rates. The discount will apply to all customers identified by the Maine State Housing Authority as eligible for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (“LIHEAP”). Once enrolled, customers will receive the discount for 12 consecutive months.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (commonly called LIHEAP or HEAP) is Federally funded through the Department of Health and Human Services. The program is not intended to pay for all heating costs, but to assist in paying the heating bills of income eligible homeowners and renters. Eleven Community Action Programs distribute the funds throughout Maine, in most cases directly to the fuel vendors.

The Federal government establishes funding levels annually. Find more information at Benefits.gov

211maine.org: If you’re struggling to keep up with your energy and utility bills, a Maine-based specialist will connect you with programs in your area that can help you. Call InfoLine at 2-1-1 for information about this program or go to 211maine.org.
